Construction crime already costs the UK construction industry around £800 million a year according to the latest industry figures from Allianz Cornhill. In 2022 it was estimated that there were 120,000 fuel theft incidents alone. In April 2022, construction sites were no longer permitted to use red diesel, making white diesel a valuable commodity and the growing trend of white diesel theft across construction sites has been on the rise ever since. Scottish Plant, an online magazine for the Scottish construction industry went so far as to declare that ‘diesel theft will be the new growth industry’.
The most effective way to prevent fuel theft is to have a comprehensive security plan in place. This plan should include the use of security guards, security cameras, and fuel management systems. However, as the image above shows, fuel tanks are often sited away from traditional security equipment. There are a number of sanctions the Housing Association or Council can issue including court injunctions, possession action and issuing Community Protection Notices if the ASB is of a persistent nature.
One solution is to position an OCULi HD battery powered PIR with a built-in camera to points overlooking the fuel tank. Upon detection of movement OCULi HD will provide rapid visual verification of the event which can be viewed in seconds via a mobile app or online portal. OCULi HD allows users to view footage in high definition within seconds of the movement detection. Users can also request more footage of an event activation. A solar conversion kit makes it viable to live stream images and manually arm/disarm, overriding the automatic arm schedule. Tamper sensors, such as when the lens is pointed downwards, will instantly show up on the portal to alert security guards to a potential breach.
OCULi HD units use ultra low power so the ability to deploy units with batteries already fitted can be done in a short period of time. Units can also be powered via a solar panel but this takes time to connect to the unit. Battery status can be monitored via the portal and alerts can be set for low battery. A magnetic mount aids quick deployment.
Working with current security patrols or as a standalone system, alarm events can be viewed within seconds and the appropriate response made including an audible warning via a horn speaker. OCULi HD units are also fitted with a powerful IR providing an extra deterrent at night. Costs can be saved by ascertaining the cause of the alarm and filtering out non-events meaning personnel do not have to attend unnecessarily. Units can be wall mounted or affixed to scaffolding, CCTV towers or even just a pole.
